PayPal vs Stripe: The Ultimate Fee Comparison for Digital Products
Choosing between PayPal and Stripe? We break down the fee structures, international conversion rates, and dispute fees to help you maximize your profit on digital products.
When selling digital products, SaaS subscriptions, or consulting services online, your two biggest options for payment processing are almost always Stripe and PayPal.
Both platforms offer incredibly robust APIs, excellent developer documentation, and high trust from consumers.
But when it comes to fees, they are not created equal. Depending on where your customers live and the average order value (AOV) of your products, choosing the wrong processor could cost you thousands of dollars a year.
The Standard Domestic Fees
For a standard transaction where both the buyer and seller are located in the United States, the fees are nearly identical:
- Stripe: 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge.
- PayPal: 3.49% + $0.49 per standard PayPal Checkout transaction (Note: PayPal recently increased their rates for commercial transactions).
Winner for Domestic: Stripe is the clear winner here. PayPal’s recent rate hikes make it significantly more expensive for standard US-to-US transactions.
International Fees & Currency Conversion
This is where the math gets complicated, and where digital product creators often lose massive amounts of margin. Because digital products are sold globally, a large percentage of your customers will likely be international.
Stripe International Fees
If a customer pays with a card issued outside the US, Stripe adds a 1.5% international card fee. If currency conversion is required (e.g., they pay in EUR and you want USD), Stripe adds another 1% conversion fee. Total International Stripe Fee: 2.9% + 1.5% + 1% + $0.30 = 5.4% + $0.30
PayPal International Fees
If a customer pays with an international PayPal account, PayPal charges a 1.5% international commercial transaction fee. If currency conversion is required, PayPal charges a hidden conversion spread (usually around 3% to 4% embedded in the exchange rate). Total International PayPal Fee: 3.49% + 1.5% + ~3.5% + $0.49 = ~8.49% + $0.49
Winner for International: Stripe is significantly cheaper for international transactions, primarily because their currency conversion fee is transparent and much lower than PayPal’s hidden spread.
Micropayments (Items under $10)
If you are selling cheap digital downloads, templates, or stickers for $3 to $5, the fixed-cent portion of the fee ($0.30 or $0.49) will destroy your margins.
- On a $3 sale, Stripe takes $0.38 (12.6% effective fee).
- On a $3 sale, PayPal takes $0.59 (19.6% effective fee).
Winner for Micropayments: Stripe is cheaper, but neither is ideal for items under $5. You should strongly consider bundling products to increase your Average Order Value.
The Verdict
In 2026, Stripe is almost always the cheaper option for sellers.
However, consumer preference is critical. Many international buyers prefer PayPal because it doesn’t require them to enter their credit card information directly on an unfamiliar website.
The optimal strategy for maximum conversion is to offer both at checkout, allowing the customer to choose.
